La Suite d'Arles was commissioned by the National Fund for Contemporary Art, initiated by the Musée Réattu of Arles and presented at the Rencontres Internationales de la Photographie 2003. A companion book of the same title is published by the Editions Filigranes.
The subject of the commission: the town of Arles.
There I found an observation post particularly well situated.
To see a sky that is the opposite of architecture, an insubstantial mould of the mineral cityscape.
To see light bent and confined by geometry.
To see wind touch stone and to see the stones memory stirred by the absence of gravity.
From that perch I sent sculptures of paper and fabric flying. Ribbons unfurled like phylacteries in the air, black, white, bands of subtitles arranged at the whim of the winds, words mixed with photograms of a film dreamed up on the spot. Primitive Annunciations, images of thought on the fly... Or golden scriptures, tossed into the sacred space, like memory frozen into form.
The ten photographs of La Suite d'Arles are intimately connected to the preceding series, Une fois et pas plus.
