Photographs by Corinne Mercadier
Text by Charles-Arthur Boyer
Devant un champ obscur is composed of two photographic series carried out in parallel from 2008 to 2012: Solo and Black Screen are distinguished from previous works by the switch from the Polaroid SX70 to digital photography, while remaining in the continuity of the work published in 2007 by Filigranes (monograph "Corinne Mercadier"): in Solo we find dark skies, the staging, the enigmatic characters and the objects thrown. But the objects have changed: large sticks, tires, balls, lines, delimit spaces that evoke a game whose rules escape. Objects and characters, most often in the foreground of this darkened theater, dance, whether they are still or in motion.
Black Screen could be the negative of Solo: scenes we discover as we open a secret door by getting used to the dark. A stack of plates, planks, a bed radiate with extreme luminosity. This series recalls the Glasstypes, Polaroids of glass paintings visible in Dreaming Journal, published by Filigranes in 1999.

This monograph retraces the artistic approach of Corinne Mercadier from 1992 to 2007.
With her particular method of double shots, the artist constructs a world of dreamlike images, out of time, with the colors and texture specific to Polaroid SX70 film.
From Landscapes (1992-94), to Where does the sky begin? (1996), Just this once (2000-2002), La Suite d'Arles (2003), Long Distance (2005), up to the altarpiece Figure Eight in Flight (2006), this book synthesizes series that tend to all towards an existential and poetic approach to presence in the world.

Introduction: Michèle Moutashar
Text: Corinne Mercadier
"Corinne Mercadier chooses celestial roofs and backsides, from those which border on the sky the ambulatory of the Cloister, or the extrados of the Prêcheurs, and the steps of Montmajour [...]
Is it a question of slowness, or more exactly of slow motion?
But the wing in suspension on the Montmajour staircase says the opposite. Are we in that dream place where rise and fall are resolved? But nothing here to indicate the existence of gravity ..." M.M.

Corinne Mercadier's veils are like the traces of an invisible in reality, like the masks of the visible through its beyond. Furtive appearances reconstituted in the fabric vapor, they infuse the photographed beings with a ghostly strangeness.

Photographs and text: Corinne Mercadier
This artist's book brings together photographs and writings by Corinne Mercadier. It appears in a time-ordered space, like any journal, and spans a little over a year. The events over the days mingle with the stubborn daydreams, the glances around oneself or towards the past, and the projects which are the subject of the work in the process of being constructed. Two series of photographs intersect, Interiors and Glasstypes. The empty places in the former and the strange isolated objects in the latter show two sides of the same search for light. And a dual approach to reality, a changing screen on which images of the visible world and images of an interior world are fixed.
